Why The Niger Bridge Is The Most Beautiful Edifice In The South East

Niger bridge

One of the most prominent edifices in the Southeastern part of Nigeria is the Niger bridge. It is commonly  referred to as the “ Onitsha Bridge” in Anambra state. This bridge connects southeastern Nigeria with western Nigeria over the River Niger.

It is a magnificent masterpiece!

Human beings have a way of trivializing things they believe are common or regular, thus sometimes missing out on the real beauty such things hold.

In Nigerian pidgin, this is referred to as the ‘see finish’ phenomenon.

What it literally means is that people feel they have seen all there is to a particular thing, therefore expect nothing new from the said thing or person.

The Niger Bridge has successfully escaped the shackles of this phenomenon.

For a 55-year old bridge, the Niger Bridge still holds one of the most spectacular sights within Nigeria, and continues to reinvent itself.

Although the bridge is popular for connecting the Western and Southeastern parts of Nigeria, it represents more than just a connector to its many visitors.

No matter how many times you have been on the bridge, you often can’t help staring at the sight of locals at the bank of the River Niger, either doing a little fishing, preparing to paddle their canoes or just standing around watching the river flow.

As you move past the full length of the bridge, you will also admire just how long the River Niger really is, imagining what’s beyond the horizon it forms.

One thing that adds evolving beauty to the ridge is the makeover it gets, year in year out.

Due to the significance of the bridge to people of SouthEastern Nigeria, the bridge often gets a lot of decoration from brands looking to appeal more to people of the region.

This mostly comes in form of signages that bear welcome and goodbye messages to travellers.

Currently, it is spotting a very bright and colorful look from Life Lager Beer who have covered a sizable length of the bridge with neon lights that have been creatively arranged to read; “Enjoy Life Responsibly”.

For commuters travelling from long distances or those who simply love night journeys, this is an amazing view you can’t ignore.

While this frequent evolution puts the Niger Bridge points ahead of other notable edifices in the South East, the view of nature it provides and the history it embodies are the other elements that ensure it stays atop the attraction list for the South East.

Now you know where to get that picturesque content for your Instagram when you visit the Southeastern part of Nigeria.

  1. I took the Niger Bridge as a child on a road trip and your photos are super nostalgic Fisayo!

Recently, I got to see the bridge in a music video and felt even better.

Lager Beer sure did a good job rejuvenating this ancient structure.

    Cheers! 🍻
