I’ve been reading a book on mindset, and it’s been stretching me to do some deeper research into certain topics like faith.
When I compared Mark 11:24, Matthew 21:22, and James 4:2, I noticed they all carry the same pattern:
“Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you shall receive them, and you will.”
That hit me.
Faith in God demands that we open our mouth to ask. Not sit in worry, despair, or pity, hoping things somehow change. Worry only keeps the burden on you. But when you ask God, you show vulnerability, faith, and trust in Him.
One key to faith is simply asking God for help. He is a good and compassionate Father.
Faith and Compassion
Here’s where it got even more interesting.
Sometimes Jesus healed because people had faith:
- The woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:34).
- Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:52).
But other times, Jesus healed without their faith being present at all:
- The paralyzed man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1–9).
- The widow’s son at Nain (Luke 7:11–15).
Why? Because His compassion and grace are bigger than our capacity.
When people are too broken, too weak, or too ignorant to believe, He still steps in.
Think of Mark 9:24: “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.”
Faith is God’s design for partnership. Compassion is God’s overflow of mercy. Together, they show us that God is both just (responds to faith) and merciful (moves in compassion).
Faith vs Works
This led me to another question: if faith is action, then what about works?
Scripture makes it clear:
- “Not by power, nor by might, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord (Zechariah 4:6).
- “By grace you have been saved through faith… not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9).
Yes, faith requires obedience. Abraham showed faith when he acted on God’s word. The woman with the issue of blood showed faith by pressing through the crowd.
But there’s a difference between Spirit-inspired action and religious works (legalism).
Works without Faith → Becomes empty religiosity, where people boast in themselves instead of in God.
Faith + Action → Flows from trust in God.
The Flow: Grace → Faith → Action → Spirit
Here’s how it really works:
- Grace – God’s undeserved favour (Ephesians 2:7–9). You didn’t earn it.
- Faith – Trusting God enough to receive His grace (Romans 5:2).
- Action – Outward expression of faith (James 2:17–18; Romans 10:9–10).
- Spirit’s Power – The Holy Spirit enabling you to live it out (Zechariah 4:6).
Final Thought:
Faith is action, but not self-powered striving.
Works don’t earn God’s grace, works flow naturally out of Spirit-empowered faith.
