6 Events To Go For To Celebrate Nigeria’s Independence Day

Don’t you just hate Lagos traffic?! I was driving home yesterday night and I was thinking to myself – “it is not easy to be a Lagosian, you have to be a sharp person to be one! Especially when driving in Lagos traffic, if not, you would find yourself in one spot for hours. Being street smart is definitely a criteria you need to be a Lagosian.” I hate traffic, I also hate the fact that the traffic doubles on Fridays (following my route), but I guess it is part of the “Lagos experience”.

Although, this post isn’t about Lagos traffic, this post embodies the events around October 1st.

October 1st 1960 is the date Nigeria gained her independence from the colonial masters or the British colony.

During my undergraduate study, this was usually the period the school management would gather students together for a forum or for a debate about Nigeria. We would embrace the color of the flag and choose to accessorize our clothes with its colors- it could be a hair bow, a bow tie, a lapel pin, a band, or you just hold the pocket size flag itself. We just wore something to signify that we were celebrating our independence day.  This was how I celebrated Nigeria’s Independence Day for four years, in school.

Being out of school, I see that there are other ways people choose to celebrate our Nation’s Independence Day. Debates are done everywhere still, and conferences are held for this purpose, mostly to enlighten Nigerians about the state of her country after 57 years of independence, and to discuss the way forward. But again, this is not what this post is about.

I will be walking you through a series of events taking place this season that I am aware of, just so you can attend the one that pleases you and make the most of your Independence Day celebration.

1. The first is a conference themed “keeping your business in business” hosted by Niyi Adesanya, the CEO of FifthGear Plus Consulting. I got to know about this conference from my mum just yesterday when I overheard her talking to her friends about it over the phone. This conference costs 75k and it takes place at Eko Hotel today from 9 am – 6pm. I believe the theme of the conference already explains what the conference will be about.

2. The second, is another conference called “The Platform” hosted yearly by Covenant Christian Center. This conference is free and it starts by 9 am on the 2nd of October with speakers like Pastor Poju Oyemade, Reverend Sam Adeyemi, Bolanle Austin Peters, Peter Obi, and more. This conference is usually very rich in content, I try and get the CD when I am not able to attend such events, and I listen to them repeatedly until my curiosity is satisfied. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER .

3.  Basketmouth will be having his yearly show titled “Lord of the Ribstoday, by 7pm. This would be a beautiful way to unwind the week stress with friends and lots of laughter. Standard tickets cost ₦5,000 and VIP tickets cost ₦30,000. This event would take place at Eko Hotel. CLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS.

4. The next, is an event I recently heard from my colleagues, called “The Lagos City Suya Carnival”. After doing some research about event, it seems to be the most talked about event taking place on the “1st of October”. The idea of this carnival is to celebrate Lagos at 50, by setting to break the world record of the longest Suya/steak with the assembly of a single 50ft Suya, thereby bagging a Guinness Book of Record for Lagos State. This event starts by 10 AM and ends by 10:30 PM,  at Alausa Ikeja.

5. Also on the list of events taking place in Lagos this season, is the first “Nigerian Beer Festival”. It is scheduled to hold from September 25 to October 1st, 2017 at Eko Atlantic City. This Beer Festival is said to be the first of its kind in the world, wishing to promote responsible drinking among drinking age (18 and above). It will provide a fitting ambience to showcase fashion and lifestyle, as well as culture in a carnival atmosphere.

6. On the 2nd of October 2017, another Live Market event will be taking place. Like I mentioned in the previous Live Market event post, the whole idea of the event is to grow a lifestyle community. This second edition of the Live Market event is themed “Proudly Nigerian”, embracing the spirit of our Independence and focusing on the trade of Nigerian products. This edition is centered on bringing together every business man or woman selling products strictly made in Nigeria to their targeted customers.

If you sell clothes, shoes, bags, home appliances, hair, anything made in Nigeria, it is not too late to register for the exhibition. To register, CLICK HERE.

And if you are just like me that just happens to be looking for a place to chill, hangout, window shop or buy something, this would be a perfect hangout spot, because, just like the maiden edition, there would be lots of FOOD, FOOD, and more FOOD vendors, there would also be a showcase of fashion and lifestyle.

The exhibition takes place at The Zone Centre, Plot 9, Gbagada Industrial Scheme, Beside UPS, Gbagada Express way. And it runs from the hours of 11am – 6pm. If you wish to know more about the Live Market event, CLICK HERE to view my previous post on the maiden edition.

Alright lovelies, these are all the events I know will be taking place in Lagos from now till the day we get back to our regular 9- 5. Tuesday! I hope by now you have gotten inspiration or an idea on how best to spend this short break, sorry that some of these information came late.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION NIGERIA!
